Yamaha E-SEQ ⇄ MIDI Online Conversion Tool

Convert Yamaha Disklavier E-SEQ (.FIL) songs or compatible Clavinova .MDA files to Standard MIDI. You can also convert Standard MIDI Format 0 or Format 1 files back to Yamaha E-SEQ for older Disklavier, Clavinova, and CVP systems.

This free online converter is intended for quick, straightforward conversion of individual song files or small batches. It can also prepare a coordinated Disklavier file set with PIANODIR.FIL when converting MIDI to Disklavier .FIL.

Files are used only for this conversion and are not kept by this website.

Your original files are never modified. Each upload is processed as a temporary copy for conversion, and the result is returned directly to your browser. Keep the originals so you can compare results and test converted copies on the hardware where they will be used.

How to use the converter

Choose the conversion direction, add your files, and convert. If you are preparing a Disklavier set, you can arrange the queue in the order you want the songs to appear. After conversion, you can download files one at a time, download all successful results as a ZIP, or create a Disklavier-ready package.

Supported formats

The converter reads Yamaha Disklavier .FIL, as well as compatible Clavinova and CVP .MDA files. It also accepts Standard MIDI Format 0 and Format 1 files as input when converting back to E-SEQ.

When converting MIDI to E-SEQ, MIDI Format 1 tracks are merged automatically, and timing is converted to the 384 PPQN timing used by this E-SEQ workflow. The converter can write output as Disklavier .FIL or compatible Clavinova .MDA.

Disklavier-ready sets

When converting MIDI to Disklavier .FIL, the converter can generate a coordinated ZIP containing up to 60 successful songs along with PIANODIR.FIL. The visible queue determines the song order. The converter also creates unique uppercase DOS-style filenames and matching internal filename keys automatically. You may enter an optional disk or album title as part of the package.

This ZIP is a collection of coordinated files for use in a Disklavier workflow. It is not a formatted floppy disk image and does not write directly to physical media.

Silent MIDI repair

Some legacy Yamaha-oriented files contain an early channel-volume message with a value of zero. Certain instruments or Yamaha software may compensate for this, but an ordinary MIDI player may interpret it literally and remain silent. The converter’s default repair option corrects only that narrow compatibility issue when later notes would otherwise be muted. If exact preservation of the original controller data is more important than generic MIDI playback, you can disable that option.

Need more than the web converter?

For complete desktop-based workflows, use APS MIDI Prep Tool. It is a fuller Windows and Linux utility for Yamaha Disklavier file and media work, including physical floppy reading, some damaged-disk recovery workflows, IMG and HFE image handling, Nalbantov and Gotek preparation, song reordering and renaming, internal title editing, MIDI inspection and playback, standalone Type 1 to Type 0 conversion, and more advanced preparation tools.

If you need to work with actual floppy disks, disk images, media emulators, or more involved MIDI preparation, APS MIDI Prep Tool is the better choice.

Compatibility and limitations

The converter accepts Standard MIDI Format 0 and Format 1 files using normal PPQN timing. It does not support MIDI Format 2 or SMPTE-timed MIDI. Yamaha Electone .EVT files are also not supported. Directory files such as PIANODIR.FIL and MUSIC.DIR are indexes rather than songs and cannot be converted as song files.

Malformed, truncated, or otherwise incomplete E-SEQ or MIDI files may be rejected, since missing event data cannot be reconstructed safely. MDA output does not include a generated MUSIC.DIR, and compatibility can vary among Clavinova, CVP, Disklavier, emulator, and third-party playback systems.

Each file is handled in a temporary conversion request and returned directly to your browser. Normal website, hosting, security, and access logging still follows this website’s privacy policy and server configuration.

Frequently asked questions

What is Yamaha E-SEQ?

E-SEQ is a Yamaha event-sequence format used by a number of early Disklavier, Clavinova, and CVP systems. Disklavier song files commonly use .FIL, while compatible Clavinova and CVP systems may use an .MDA container.

Can I convert a Disklavier FIL file to MIDI?

Yes. Choose E-SEQ to MIDI and add the .FIL file. The converter returns a Standard MIDI Format 0 .mid file.

Can I convert MIDI back to Disklavier FIL?

Yes. Choose MIDI to E-SEQ and leave Disklavier .FIL selected. Standard MIDI Format 0 and Format 1 files are supported when they use PPQN timing.

Can the converter create PIANODIR.FIL?

Yes. When preparing a Disklavier-ready set, the ZIP includes a generated PIANODIR.FIL and up to 60 successfully converted songs in the order shown in the queue.

Does the ZIP create a complete floppy disk?

No. It creates a coordinated file set, not a formatted floppy image. Use APS MIDI Prep Tool for physical disks, IMG or HFE images, Nalbantov media, Gotek media, and more complete filesystem workflows.

Are uploaded files saved?

The file is processed temporarily for that conversion request and the result is returned to your browser. The converter does not create a Media Library attachment or retain the converted result for later access.

Can this recover a damaged floppy disk?

The web converter validates and converts readable song files, but it is not a general disk-recovery service. APS MIDI Prep Tool provides fuller workflows for working with disks and some damaged disk images.

Is this an official Yamaha utility?

No. E-SEQ MIDI Converter and APS MIDI Prep Tool are independent compatibility and preservation utilities and are not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Yamaha.
