How to play a MIDI file online
- Click Choose MIDI and select a
.midor.midifile from your computer or phone. - Click Load, then Play to hear the music.
- Use the tempo and volume controls to adjust playback. The piano roll provides a visual representation of the notes, and the zoom control changes its scale.
- For supported piano files, use Create WAV to render a downloadable audio preview.
You can also use the built-in chromatic scale demo to try the player without uploading a file of your own.
Convert piano MIDI to WAV audio
Want an audio version of a piano MIDI performance? The player includes a MIDI-to-WAV rendering feature. When WAV export is available in piano playback mode, click Create WAV, wait for the rendering to finish, and select Download WAV.
This is useful for making an audio preview, sharing a passage with someone who doesn’t have MIDI software, or listening on a device that cannot play MIDI files directly. Tempo and volume adjustments can also be useful when preparing a practice recording.
WAV export is available for supported piano playback, not every multi-instrument MIDI file. The resulting audio uses the player’s sound engine; it will not sound exactly like your Yamaha keyboard, Disklavier, or acoustic piano.
What can you check with this MIDI player?
- Hear an unfamiliar MIDI file before loading it onto a keyboard or player piano.
- Visualize notes and timing with the piano-roll display.
- Adjust playback speed to listen more carefully to a performance.
- Preview MIDI arrangements without launching a music production application.
- Make a WAV audio preview when the file supports piano-mode export.
A browser preview is a useful first check, but it is not a complete test of compatibility with a particular instrument. A MIDI file may sound correct here while still requiring conversion or channel adjustments for an older player piano.

Using MIDI files with Yamaha Disklaviers and player pianos
I regularly encounter MIDI files that play perfectly well on a computer but fail to play correctly on a Yamaha Disklavier or another player piano. The problem is not necessarily the music itself. Older instruments may have particular requirements for MIDI file format, channel assignments, or other playback data.
For example, a Type 1 MIDI file can contain multiple tracks. Some older playback systems expect Type 0, which combines the tracks while retaining their MIDI channels. Converting to Type 0 may resolve a playback problem, but it will not automatically correct incompatible channel assignments.

Common MIDI playback problems
Why does the MIDI file sound mechanical?
Some MIDI files have very uniform note velocities, rigid timing, or little expressive pedal data. Others were entered directly into notation software rather than recorded from a performance. These can sound mechanical even on a good instrument. However, the sound engine also matters: a simplified browser rendering may not reproduce every nuance of a recorded piano performance.
Why does only one hand play on my Disklavier?
Possible causes include the file’s track structure, MIDI channel assignments, or limitations of the piano’s playback system. Converting a Type 1 file to Type 0 sometimes helps, but the left- and right-hand parts may also need to be routed to the correct channels. Use the MIDI file checker to investigate before changing the file.
Why does the piano sound different from my keyboard?
MIDI is performance data, not a recording of a particular piano. The same notes can sound very different when played through a browser sound engine, a Yamaha Clavinova, a software instrument, or an acoustic Disklavier. Differences in tone and dynamics do not necessarily mean that the MIDI file is defective.
Why do the timing or pedals sound wrong?
MIDI files can contain tempo changes, sustain-pedal commands, note velocities, and other controller events. Different playback engines do not always interpret or reproduce all of these events identically. The problem may be in the MIDI data, the software rendering, or the receiving instrument. Compare playback on another device and inspect the file before deciding which is responsible.

Can I convert MIDI to MP3 or WAV?
The player can render supported piano MIDI files as downloadable WAV audio. It does not currently provide a direct MP3 export option. For compatible files, use Create WAV followed by Download WAV.
What is the difference between a MIDI file and a WAV file?
A MIDI file contains musical instructions such as note pitches, velocities, timing, and controller events. A WAV file contains actual digital audio samples. Converting MIDI to WAV requires a sound engine to turn those instructions into audible sound.
Can this player open Yamaha E-SEQ files?
This player is intended for standard MIDI files ending in .mid or .midi. Yamaha E-SEQ files use a different format and may need conversion first. My APS MIDI Prep Tool includes E-SEQ and MIDI conversion features for compatible files.
Will a MIDI file that works here also work on my Disklavier?
Not necessarily. Playback in a browser shows that the software can interpret the file, but a Disklavier may have different requirements. The file format, channels, controller data, and specific Disklavier generation all matter. The MIDI file checker is a useful next step if the instrument refuses to play a song.
