Yamaha Disklavier DKC-800 / E3 Compatibility Guide

All Disklavier Models

The DKC-800/E3 generation moves the normal Disklavier workflow from floppy disks to USB and CD. It records performances as Standard MIDI Files, still plays older E-SEQ and PianoSoft songs, and can be upgraded with a DKC-900.

DKC-900

Things to Know

Recordings are created in SMF0. E-SEQ support is playback-only. Can use the Yamaha UD-FD01 external floppy disk drive.

Requires updated firmware for Disklavier Radio and other online services.

Can be controlled with the Yamaha Disklavier Controller app (Apple only).

This system is eligible to be upgraded to the DKC-900. See my generation-by-generation Disklavier upgrade guide for the supported paths.

A standalone DKC-800 can sometimes be repurposed as a DKC-850-style upgrade controller for an older piano; this is not an upgrade to the E3 piano itself, and Yamaha does not endorse the modification. My DKC-800-to-DKC-850 conversion guide covers the required changes, parts, installation modes, and limitations.

USB flash drives may use FAT16 or FAT32; USB hard disks must use FAT32. See my guide on properly formatting USB media for Disklaviers.

Each storage medium can contain up to 99 albums with up to 999 songs per album. Yamaha recommends no more than 150 video-synchronized songs on one USB device.

Although Smart PianoSoft is supported, CD playback is synchronized with files on a USB stick rather than directly with the original floppy. PianoSoft Audio can be played from CD or USB, while PianoSoft Solo and Plus files can be downloaded and placed on USB. To preserve an older Smart PianoSoft floppy/CD set, follow my Smart PianoSoft conversion guide.
