Frequently Asked Questions About Piano Lessons in Maine

How much do piano lessons cost in Maine?

Piano lesson prices vary by teacher, lesson length, location, and whether lessons are billed individually or as monthly tuition.

Publicly listed examples in Maine range from about $40 for a 30-minute lesson to $80 for a 60-minute lesson. Midtown Music in Biddeford lists piano lessons at $40 for a half hour and $65 for one hour. Maine Academy of Modern Music lists school-year private lesson tuition at $170/month for weekly 30-minute lessons, $225/month for 45-minute lessons, and $280/month for 60-minute lessons. Justin Ramos Music / White Mountain Piano lists $40 for 30 minutes, $60 for 45 minutes, and $80 for 60 minutes.

Some studios, including Jacqui’s Music Studio, use monthly tuition that also covers the broader studio program, group classes, recitals, and teacher preparation.

Are there piano teachers in Maine who travel to students’ homes?

Yes. Some teachers offer in-home piano lessons, but availability depends heavily on town, schedule, and driving distance. In this directory, teachers marked with a ★ offer or have offered travel to students’ homes.

For example, Music With Mona says she travels within Southern Maine for private lessons, and Joy Tremont lists lessons in the student’s home in Portland, South Portland, and Falmouth. Always confirm current travel areas directly with the teacher before enrolling.

Are online piano lessons available?

Yes. Online piano lessons are available from several Maine teachers and schools. In this directory, teachers marked with a ☆ offer or have offered online lessons.

Maine Academy of Modern Music says remote lessons are available by Google Meet, while Rachel Bennett Music currently teaches virtually only. Justin Ramos Music also advertises online lessons with multiple camera angles and clear audio.

Online lessons can work well for older children, teens, and adults, especially when the student already has a reliable piano or keyboard at home.

Who teaches adult piano students?

Many Maine piano teachers accept adult students, including beginners.

Jacqui’s Music Studio has a specific adult lesson program with every-other-week hour-long lessons and adult duet events. Maine Academy of Modern Music offers lessons for all ages and notes that adult and homeschool students may request daytime lessons. Justin Ramos Music lists adults of any age or level, and GSP Music Lessons lists private instruction for ages 4 through adult.

Many teachers enjoy working with adults who are starting fresh or returning after years away.

Who teaches young beginners?

Several teachers and schools on this list work with young beginners. Music With Mona advertises beginner group classes for children under 6, ages 7 and up, and daytime classes for ages 3-5. Jacqui’s Music Studio offers preschool piano and musical-playground lessons for ages 3-6, as well as lessons through advanced levels. GSP Music Lessons lists instruction for ages 4 through adult.

Very young students often do best with a teacher who specifically works with early childhood music, short attention spans, movement, singing, rhythm games, and parent involvement.

Do I need an acoustic piano for lessons?

Not always, but students do need a suitable instrument for regular practice. Some teachers strongly prefer or require an acoustic piano or a weighted-action digital piano.

Jacqui’s Music Studio, for example, says piano students must have either an acoustic piano or a keyboard with weighted action and a pedal at home.

For beginners, a good digital piano with full-size weighted keys and a sustain pedal is often enough to start, but small unweighted keyboards can become limiting quickly. Ask the teacher before buying an instrument. I have a guide to buying inexpensive digital pianos and keyboards.

How do I choose the right piano teacher?

Choose based on the student’s age, goals, location, schedule, and musical interests. Some teachers focus on classical training, some on pop, jazz, songwriting, worship music, or modern styles, and some work especially well with young beginners or adult learners.

Ask about lesson format, practice expectations, recitals, online options, make-up policies, and what kind of piano or keyboard is required at home. A short consultation or trial lesson is often the best way to see whether the teacher is a good fit.

If you can provide any leads it would be appreciated. My name is Walter Gilpin, we’re located at Deering Pavilion. We have a modest budget allocated for entertainment for our residents.
