Yamaha Disklavier DCD1 / DCD-1 Upgrade Compatibility Guide

All Disklavier Models

The DCD1 is a CD playback add-on—not a replacement controller—for Mark I, Mark II, and Mark II XG Disklaviers. When connected to a supported controller setup, the DCD1+PS/PianoSmart version can also synchronize compatible Smart PianoSoft floppy disks with their companion CDs.

Things to Know

DCD1 adds CD playback; Smart PianoSoft synchronization requires the DCD1+PS/PianoSmart version and a compatible host setup.

Regular DCD1 playback covers Audio/MIDI CD and Audio CD. DCD1+PS/PianoSmart adds Smart PianoSoft synchronization and lets compatible older systems use the accompanying audio and ensemble paths.

I outline my preferred method of connecting the DCD1 to Bluetooth-MIDI devices in this article. Alternatively, PianoStream has a page explaining how to connect Bluetooth-MIDI devices to the DCD1.

Smart PianoSoft disks are pitch-synced with CDs on Mark III systems (plus or minus 25 cents); regular DCD1 does not support that Mark III behavior. With DCD1+PS/PianoSmart, only Smart PianoSoft titles recorded at A440 Hz or officially designated as DCD1-compatible will sync properly.

Yamaha lists DKC50R, DKC500RWXG, DKC500RW, DSR1, and DKC55 as compatible control units; DKC500R and DKC500RXG require the EMK1 kit, and other earlier controllers need a DSR1 upgrade path for DCD1+PS functions.

DCD1+PS was sold as a DCD1 preloaded with PianoSmart firmware and bundled with two MIDI cables, update disks, and a manual.

Depending on the host piano, DCD1 audio requires powered speakers or headphones, while MIDI instrumental accompaniment requires a compatible tone generator. Yamaha also marketed DCD1 for selected MIDI-equipped Silent/MIDIPiano, GranTouch, Disklavier GranTouch, and Clavinova hosts.
