APS independent repair experience; not authorized. Inclusion in the guide is not an endorsement.
The most important fact about the Alesis Recital is not its voice count: it has a semi-weighted action. For a buyer seeking an inexpensive 88-key instrument, that distinction deserves to be near the top of the page. A full set of keys does not by itself make the playing experience equivalent to a hammer-action digital piano.
What the original Recital offers
According to Alesis’s published specifications, the Recital has five sounds, 128-note polyphony, USB MIDI, stereo RCA outputs and a headphone socket. It can use six D-cell batteries. The base listing does not include a sustain pedal, although retailer bundles may differ. Recital Play and Recital Pro are separate products, not alternative names for this one.
Who should pay attention to the action
For someone whose aim is piano lessons and eventual use of acoustic pianos, I would normally begin by trying hammer-action alternatives. For casual keyboard use, a lighter-feeling instrument may be acceptable. The important thing is an informed choice rather than assuming that ’88 keys’ answers the question. Adjustable touch response changes how playing is interpreted; it does not turn the mechanism into a different kind of action.
Include a stable stand, suitable seating and the pedal in the actual cost comparison. A headline price that leaves out those items is not directly comparable with a complete console. My pedal compatibility guide is useful when checking what a replacement or bundled pedal actually does.
My reservations are also about ownership
I have repaired Alesis instruments and generally have not been impressed with their construction, ease of service or viable parts access. This is a reason for caution, not evidence that every Recital will fail or that I have documented a specific recurring fault in this version.
Before treating a low purchase price as a bargain, ask whether an independent technician can obtain key contacts, mechanical parts or the relevant board. The existence of a repair network is not a substitute for confirming the specific part and its economic practicality.
What I would compare
Start with the piano-focused options in my digital piano comparison guide, and compare the full setup rather than just the keyboard price. Already have a Recital? Keep using a working instrument. For a fault, send the exact model and symptom through contact me; the name alone does not establish whether a repair will be worthwhile.
Alesis lists warranty and independent repair-center routes. That is not the same as confirming that an independent technician can obtain the particular part your piano needs. Ask about parts for the exact model and revision before treating future repair as a given.

From the service side
My technician’s perspective
Firsthand brand-level repairs; no exact-model teardown claimed
My opinion reflects Alesis instruments I have repaired: I generally find the construction disappointing, service access awkward and usable replacement parts difficult to secure. It is not an exact-model Recital teardown or a claim that Alesis offers no service route. Alesis publicly lists warranty support and independent repair centers.
