Scott Joplin

Scott Joplin (c. 1868–1917) was the leading figure of the ragtime era and a foundational composer in the history of American music. Known as the “King of Ragtime,” Joplin brought sophistication, structure, and lasting artistic value to a style often dismissed in its own time as mere popular entertainment. His piano rags—most famously Maple Leaf Rag and The Entertainer—combine infectious syncopation with formal clarity and elegance.

Joplin also aspired to larger forms, composing operas and extended works that reflected his belief in ragtime as a serious art music. Though his work fell into obscurity late in his life, Joplin’s music was rediscovered in the 20th century and is now recognized as a cornerstone of American musical tradition.
