Robert Schumann
Robert Schumann (1810–1856) was a leading composer of the Romantic era whose music is marked by deep lyricism, imagination, and psychological intensity. Originally aspiring to a career as a concert pianist, Schumann turned to composition after a hand injury and went on to write influential works for piano, song, chamber ensemble, and orchestra.
His piano music—often inspired by literature and personal inner worlds—features vivid character pieces and contrasting emotional states, while his lieder set new standards for the expressive union of poetry and music. As a respected critic and champion of emerging composers, Schumann played a vital role in shaping 19th-century musical thought, and his works remain central to the Romantic repertoire.
