Joseph Haydn
Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) was one of the most influential composers of the Classical era and is often called the “Father of the Symphony” and the “Father of the String Quartet.” Over a long and remarkably productive career—much of it spent in service to the Esterházy court—Haydn helped define the musical forms and structures that shaped Western art music for generations.
His music is known for its clarity, balance, wit, and inventive use of surprise, combining intellectual craftsmanship with an unmistakable sense of warmth and humor. Haydn’s influence extended directly to composers such as Mozart and Beethoven, and his works remain central to the piano, chamber, orchestral, and choral repertoire today.
