Irving Berlin
Irving Berlin (1888–1989) was one of the most prolific and enduring songwriters in American history, shaping the sound of popular music for more than half a century. An immigrant who arrived in the United States as a child, Berlin wrote hundreds of songs that became standards, including “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” “Cheek to Cheek,” “White Christmas,” and “God Bless America.”
Largely self-taught and writing primarily at the piano, he had an unmatched gift for melody and plainspoken lyricism that spoke directly to everyday life, love, and national identity. Berlin’s music bridged Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood, leaving a legacy that continues to define the Great American Songbook.
