Bennie Gunn
Bennie Gunn is a New Zealand jazz pianist, composer, and arranger known for relaxed, swinging performances rooted in the classic jazz tradition. His playing draws on the language of early swing and mainstream jazz, with an emphasis on strong time, clear melodic lines, and an easy, conversational feel at the keyboard.
Gunn’s repertoire centers on well-loved jazz standards and blues, including tunes such as “Sweet Lorraine,” alongside original compositions that fit comfortably within the straight-ahead jazz idiom. Whether performing solo piano or working with ensembles, his style favors warmth and groove over flash, recalling the approach of mid-20th-century jazz pianists rather than modern fusion or crossover styles.
Based in Auckland, Bennie Gunn has been active for decades as a performer and writer, contributing both recordings and arrangements to the New Zealand jazz scene. His work is best appreciated as swing-based jazz piano—music designed to feel natural, inviting, and timeless.
